A substantial proportion of British

imports from Hong Kong in recent years have consisted of textiles and clothing.

2.9 Government revenue in 1981/82 was an estimated HK$35,000

million (approx. £3,255 million), 32% of which came from direct

taxes mainly profits tax); 18% from indirect taxes (rates, excise

duties, stamp duties, betting taxes, motor vehicle taxes); 28% from land sales; and the remainder from other sources, such as payments for government services.

2.10 Of total government expenditure on consolidated account in 1981/82 of an estimated HK$30,938 million (approx. £2,878 million)

in 1981/82, some 42% was spent on social services, 22% on community services (transport, water supplies, amenities, etc), 16% on general services (administration, law and order, defence, etc), 8% on

economic services (airport, harbours, communications, etc), and the remainder on miscellaneous items such as common supporting

services.

EDUCATION

3.1

Approximately 12% of total Government expenditure is on education (an estimated HK$4,409 million in 1981/82). The

Government provides nine years compulsory free education for all. There are two universities with a total undergraduate enrolment for the 1981/82 session of nearly 10,000 students, and a postgraduate enrolment of about 2,300. The Hong Kong Polytechnic provides higher education in mainly technical and commercial subjects, and had about 7,000 full-time and 18,200 part-time students registered for the 1981/82 session. Planning has begun for a second Polytechnic.
