Singapore is classified as a Newly Industrialising Country
and is sufficiently competitive in radios and some electronic
components to merit restrictive quota treatment under the GSP
for these products in addition to plywood. Total imports to
the UK in 1980 were £178.9m (excluding bullion imports) and
of these 21.5% (£38.4m) were admitted under the GSP. All but
5% of the GSP imports were of industrial products.
(v) Thailand of all the ASEAN countries, Thailand sends the
highest proportion of textile products (17.6%) in her GSP imports to the UK. Total imports to the UK in 1980 were £52.Om
and of these 40.2% (£20.9m) were under the GSP. Just over
half of the GSP imports were of industrial products (gas
containers, some leather products and hardwoods) and most of
the agricultural products (31% of GSP imports) were of fish
products and tobacco. As one of the poorer GSP beneficiaries,
Thailand is not subject to the more restrictive tariff quotas
under the GSP.
