HONG KONG CONCERNS
10.7
The Guangdong Nuclear Power Project gets a good deal of
press coverage in Hong Kong. There is a small but vocal anti-
nuclear lobby, a mix of well-meaning idealists and a handful of professional protesters. They are drawn together under the
umbrella of the Joint Organisation for Concern of Nuclear
Energy. The organisation has said that it would be writing to
the three governments involved, asking questions about the project. The movement may gather momentum a's plans for the
project get firmer. In his address on 6 October to the
Legislative Council the Governor said: "We have no reason to believe that those involved will be other than responsible in their attitude to the safety of the plant both in construction
and operation. And I should like to assure Honourable Members that, in so far as it is likely to affect Hong Kong, we shall keep this issue under close and careful review."
18, Should the project not come to fruition, for whatever
reason, CLP are likely to consider the possibility of a Castle Peak 'C' station to meet rising electricity demands. The UK would be extremely well placed to pursue the contract because of
its success on the 'A' and 'B' stations.
