During the last few weeks I have visited

Australia, Hong Kong, Peking and Shanghai.

The visit to China was as a result of an invitation from the Chinese Government when they knew I was in Hong Kong en route to Australia.

In the course of my visit to Canberra I had talks with Sir John Mason and his staff. Here I would like to pay tribute to the way I was received and to the practical help which I got in seeing Ministers and the Wool men with whom I have had a long association. In particular I would mention Peter Smart, the Deputy Commissioner, who gave me unstinted assistance in organising my unexpected visit to Peking.

E.E.C. matters came up for discussion with members of the Commission and, as I am a member of the Select Committee of the E.E.C. at the Lords, I asked them if they ever saw any of the Reports. The answer was "No" but they would be glad of Reports which had a bearing on their problems in Australia, so I have made arrangements with the E.E.C. office in the Lords to send out the relevant documents.

May I say that the House of Lords Select Committee on Europe does a very valuable job, but the distribution of its Reports could do with urgent consideration and action.

With best wishes,

I am,

Yours sincerely

The Rt. Hon.Lord Carrington, KCMG.,MC., Secretary of State for Foreign and

Commonwealth Affairs.
