BRIEFING
I have spoken to the Clerk on the basis of your minute of 27 May. The Committee accept your offer of an oral briefing on Japan and Hong Kong and suggest you call on them in the House on Wednesday 16 June at 3.00 pm. If this timing is convenient to you, I will confirm to the Clerk.
2.
For various reasons, probably not more than half of the travelling party of 13 members and advisers will be present: there will be no outsiders. You may wish to be accompanied by someone from FED and HKGD. As you assume, this would not be an evidence session, and hence what you say is not for publication. If you need to touch on matters which are not in the public domain, or classified, it would be appropriate for you to preface your remarks with a suitable caveat.
3. Before your briefing the Committee will have received HKGD's general brief on Hong Kong. Defence Department are preparing briefs which the Committee have requested by 21 June
on:
a) Japan's position vis à vis NATO and Western defence, and possible enchancement of her role in defending "Western" interests.
b) the US view of burden-sharing within the Alliance.
These may not reach the Committee before the oral briefing.
