Future of Hong Kong

The Secretary of State is familiar with the backgroun
to this subject. The Australians in particular have taken
a great interest in the future of Hong Kong, and have
on a number of occasions talked about it with the
Chinese.

This is likely to be the most important topic
in the Prime Minister's discussions in Peking. As the
Prime Minister is leaving the UK for the Far East on
16 September, the day after the Secretary of State's
meeting, interest in the visit is likely to be high.
The Prime Minister will be in China from 22-26
September and Hong Kong from 26-28 September.
