Future of Hong Kong

1.

The Secretary of State is familiar with the backgroun

to this subject. The Australians in particular have taken

a great interest in the future of Hong Kong, and have

on a number of occasions talked about it with the

Chinese.

2.

This is likely to be the most important topic

in the Prime Minister's discussions in Peking. As the

Prime Minister is leaving the UK for the Far East on

16 September, the day after the Secretary of State's

meeting, interest in the visit is likely to be high.
