Your Excellency Maclehose:
On behalf of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), I, Chairman of its Sixth Triennial Conference in San Jose, Costa Rica last July, cordially express my profound gratitude and highest respect to Your' Excellency for your dedicated leadership and peerless contribution to the cause of world peace.
As Your Excellency might be informed, the General Assembly of the United Nations in its 36th Session, adopted the agenda Biten 133 entitled "Declaration of A Year of Peace and A Day of
Peace" which shall fall on the third Tuesday of September every year, as enclosed herewith. Taking this opportunity, above all else, Your Excellency's support for this proposal shall be, I believe, remembered by future historians as a weighty contribution to humanity in averting the impending doomsday crisis of the 1980s.
Upon hearing of the passage of the agenda, we, members of the IAUP, along with other educators of the world, deeply rejoiced because the proposal for setting up the U.N. Peace Day had originally resolved in the said Conference. And the Republic of Costa Rica, the host-country of the meeting, took the burden of mobilizing peace forces within the General Assembly to bring it into fruition by the special directive of His Excellency Rodrigo Carazo Odio, the President of the Republic of Costa Rica.
As educators, we believe that peace is no longer a subject for a leisurely discussion among ideologues. Nor is it one of
