Dea Mr. Tsui,

füm 2317

Your letter of 18 June to the Prime Minister has been passed to me for a reply.

101

Thank you for your kind words about the outcome of the Falklands conflict.

I think however that it is wrong to try to draw parallels between the Falklands and Hong Kong. There are many differences.

Both we and the Chinese are studying the question of Hong Kong's future carefully. No decisions have yet been taken but we are all agreed on the importance of Hong Kong's con-- tinued stability and prosperity. As British Government Ministers have said, on a number of occasions, the interests of the people of Hong Kong would be taken into account.

In

the meantime I can assure you that our constitutional responsibility to Hong Kong is undiminished.
