HONG KONG AND THE FALKLAND ISLANDS

What is the legal basis of the British position

in Hong Kong?

Answer:

The United Kingdom's position is based on the Treaty of

Nanking of 1842 and the first Convention of Peking of 1960

under which Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula and

Stonecutters Island were ceded to the British Crown and

the second Convention of Peking of 1898 covering the

Lease of the New Territories.

The present arrangements have the full agreement of the

Chinese and British Governments and are working well.

Question:

Does HMG intend to stand by its commitment to

Hong Kong and its people?

Answer :

Yes, Ministers have on many occasions made clear that our

constitutional responsibility to Hong Kong and its people

remains undiminished.
