Mr McLaren rang this morning to say that there is growing concern in Hong Kong about losses of Chinese seamen on board ships damaged last Tuesday off the Falklands. It could become quite an issue domestically. See 47 Mr McLaren knows that the CBF is in touch with the MOD and he is sure they are being helpful, but the Governor is anxious that we should impress upon them the need for the maximum possible cooperation and speed in making details known. This is not just because of the need to inform the next of kin butbecause there is also a political aspect in Hong Kong.
3.
Mr McLaren mentioned that there were some 450 Chinese seamen serving with the Task Force and that his latest information was that as many as 37 may now have been killed or reported missing.
