Progress made and present position
Next quarter target
Following the enactment of the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance 1982, the Smoking (Public Health) Regulations 1982 was made by the Governor in Council on 10 August and the Smoking (Public Health) (Notices) Order 1982 by the Secretary for Social Services on the same date. As from 15 November all cigarette advertisement in printed publications will be required to carry a health warning and tar group designation. Provisions relating to no- smoking areas, health warnings on cigarette packets etc. will come into effect in stages. Close liaison has been maintained with the departments concerned to iron out any practical problems of implementation.
A draft Bill has been prepared to amend the Supplementary Medical Professions Ordinance to enable the establishment of an Optometrists Board. This is being examined in the context of item 8(a) below.
(a) The Supplementary Medical Professions
(Amendment) Bill was examined by a Working Group appointed by the Supplementary Medical Professions Council (SMPC) following which certain amendments were suggested for incorporation in a revised draft bill.
(b) The Medical Laboratory Technicians Board
and the Physiotherapists Board have submitted their recommendations on the draft regulations. These were accepted by the SMPC at its last meeting held on
7 October and will be incorporated in the revised drafts regulations now being prepared.
