Purpose

(c) To review the policy on

the language of instruction in schools.

To ensure that a reasonable standard is maintained at the College if Government subsidies are to continue.

To assess the degree programmes proposed by the Polytechnic.

To decide whether this Centre. should be registered.

Progress made and present position

(c) Research is being carried out by

the Educational Research Establishment of the Education Department into the language used inside and outside the classroom. A series of surveys have been planned and tests of English and Chinese will be carried out. The project is expected to take about 3 years to complete.

Meetings have been held with the Education Department to consider the appropriate role of the College and the means to ensure the educational standard of the College.

UPGC recommended for ExCo's approval a degree programme in Mechanical and Marine Engineering. Further CNAA assessment of degree programmes in Design, Civil and Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and Textile/Clothing Marketing have been planned.

On 31. August 82 ExCo. refused to. register the Open College Study Centre in Hong Kong and the applicant, Professor D. Swift, from University of East Asia, was duly informed.
