Contract Hire Cars

Purpose.
To implement the policy for ontract hire cars as directed "by the Governor in Council
and to replace existing pak pais, including providing for the safe and legal carriage of young children to school and kindergarten.
(a)
Progress Made & Present Position
As at 15.4.82, 1,122 private hire car permits, 1,401 school hire car permits, 12 hotel hire car permits, 22 tour hire car permits and 60 airport hire car permits had been issued. The legal limit for hotel hire car permits has been raised to 300 and 237 new permits will soon issue. TAC has endorsed the proposal that the legislation should be amended to extend the eligibility for tour hire car permits to sub- contractors of tourist companies.
(b) As at 15.4.82, of the 723 appeals to the Transport Tribunal against the Commissioner for Transport's refusal to issue permits, 705 cases had been considered, and 18 cases were the subject of further investi- gation. In 74 cases the Commissioner's decision was reversed.
(c)
Draft legislation to provide for the formal appointment of a legal adviser to the Tribunal is in preparation.
