QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORTS : EDUCATION BRANCH
1.
See (14

We have been looking at the Education Branch Progress Report for May to July 1982 which you recently sent to us, and have noticed a couple of points on which it would be helpful to have your comments.
2.
Firstly, the table on provision of junior secondary places shows that in 1989-90 it will be necessary to buy 7265 Form I places in private independent schools (Classification B and C), whereas the previous report had indicated that these would be phased out in 1988-89.
3.
Secondly, the projected provision of Form IV places is also lower than in the previous report, and declines significantly in percentage terms after 1985-6. Similarly the percentage provision of Form VI places in terms of the policy target has fallen.
4.
We guess that both changes are due to revised population estimates. Is this so? Do you see the problem being eased, and if so how? This is the sort of thing on which we might get questioned here.
