BRITISH DEPENDENT TERRITORIES PARTY TO THE EUROPEAN CONVENTION

ON HUMAN RIGHTS.

1.

In answering the attached letter, I need your confirmation that the following Dependent Territories are a party to the European Convention on Human Rights, and have signed the optional articles recognising the jurisdiction of the European Court. Would you please confirm that ratification has been made:

Anguilla

Bermuda

Cayman Islands

Falkland Islands

Gibraltar

St Helena

Turks and Caicos Islands.

1. The European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, 1950, was extended to these territories by HMG from 23 October 1953. As regards Articles 25 (right of individual petition) and 46 (compulsory jurisdiction of the Court), HMG renewed the declarations in respect of the UK and these territories for a further period of three years from 14 January 1981; these apply until 13 January 1986.
