Dear Permanent Secretary
BRITISH NATIONALITY ACT 1981: NATIONALITY DEFINITIONS IN TREATIES
I am directed to transmit herewith for the information of your department a copy of a Note addressed to all Diplomatic Missions in London.
1.
2. The Note reflects the general practice followed by the Uni- ted Kingdom that we do not normally seek to revise treaties solely in order to bring designations contained in them into line with changes in our domestic law. However, departments are advised to examine treaties within their areas of responsibility which contain references to the existing titles of categories of United Kingdom nationals to check that the changes in nomen- clature introduced by the new Nationality Act do not necessitate amendment to the treaties. Other States Parties to such treaties may, of course, propose amendments.
3. It will be necessary to take account of the new nomencla- tures in any future negotiations concerning treaties which contain references to United Kingdom nationals.
4.
It would be appreciated if this letter could be brought to the attention of all sections within your responsibility which are concerned with treaties.
Yours faithfully
