PQ ON UK DEPENDENCIES: HANSARD 10 MAY COL 187 (WRITTEN ANSWERS)

1. I was rather surprised to see an Answer to a Parliamentary Question on 10 May (copy attached), which listed the "remaining dependent 16 territories" and which did not include the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, which indisputably are dependent territories. They are the remainder of the Colony of Cyprus and, though they have a somewhat unusual regime, they are undoubtedly a dependent territory. A question also arises whether there should have been some reference to the Isle of Man and Channel Islands, which legally are also "dependencies", though not usually called "dependent territories". I wonder what explanation would be given if someone were to comment on the absence of the Sovereign Base Areas. I believe that the Answer was not in fact cleared with your Legal Adviser at the time.
