PITCAIRN GROUP OF ISLANDS

HAVE THE INHABITANTS OF PITCAIRN EVER EXPRESSED A DESIRE

FOR INDEPENDENCE?

21.

In 1968 the Island Council declared unanimously

that they did not wish to alter the relationship with the

UK, but that if change were desirable the Council had full

confidence that this could be negotiated satisfactorily.

HAS THERE BEEN A CHANGE IN THE PITCAIRNERS' ATTITUDE

SINCE 1968?

22.

No. The declaration of 16 June has not been

rescinded, nor has the Island Council expressed any wish

for a change in status.

WHAT AID DOES HER MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT GIVE TO PITCAIRN TO

'PROMOTE CONSTRUCTIVE MEASURES OF DEVELOPMENT'?

23.

Aid is granted to Pitcairn where the need arises.

For example, the Overseas Development Administration paid

£47,000 towards the construction of the jetty in 1977 and met

the cost of the visit of a New Zealand army officer who

undertook repairs to the jetty in June/July this year.

DOES PITCAIRN HAVE SELF-GOVERNMENT?

24. Pitcairn islanders run their internal affairs through

an Island Council which consists of elected and nominated

members.
