WHY DOES HER MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT NOT TRANSMIT INFORMATION

ON HONG KONG UNDER ARTICLE 73(e)?

15. In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a

recommendation by the Committee of 24 that Hong Kong be

removed from. the list of non-self-governing countries to

DID HER MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT AGREE TO THIS RECOMMENDATION?

16. The recommendation was included in a resolution by the

Committee of 24. This resolution also contained a number

of other recommendations which Her Majesty's Government

felt unable to agree to. Her Majesty's Government therefore

voted against the resolution.

WHAT EFFECT DID THE RECOMMENDATION HAVE ON HONG KONG'S STATUS?

17. Her Majesty's Government's Permanent Representative at the

United Nations wrote to the Secretary-General on 14 December 1972

putting on record that the reason for the United Kingdom

discontinuing to transmit information on Hong Kong was because

no useful purpose would be served by continuing this. The letter

also recorded that the action of the General Assembly in no way

affected the legal status of Hong Kong.
