BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY (Continued)

10. The Chagos had no institutions of their own, they were

administered (until the creation of the British Indian Ocean

; Territory) as dependencies of Mauritius. Their longer term

future, given the lack of local facilities in the Chagos

and the Islands' poor economic prospects, is and was best

assured by their integration in the society of Mauritius,

of which they are citizens, and with which they have long-

standing family ties. It is for this purpose that the

British Government have made, in agreement with the Ilois

as well as the Mauritius Government, a full and final

payment of £4 million to resettle the Ilois in Mauritius.
