1.
Of the nineteen bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements which the UK has signed, two have been extended to Hong Kong. These are:
(i) the Korea/UK IPPA, which was signed on 4 March 1976, and
was extended to Hong Kong in July 1976; and
(ii) the Sri Lanka/UK IPPA, signed on 13 February 1980, and
extended to Hong Kong in June 1981.
2. Hong Kong has recently shown interest in the extension of a number of other IPPAs to her territory, namely those which the UK has with Egypt, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Jordan, Bangladesh, Lesotho and Papua New Guinea. Provided the Governments of the countries in question agree, these territorial extensions should enter into force over the next few months. Investments made by Hong Kong citizens and companies in these countries will then be protected by the terms of the relevant Agreement.
