self inspection questionnaire on the Unit was sent to

TRED on 5 October with the rest of the Trade Commission's

SIQS (see para 4 above). Questions concerning recent

trends in Sino-British trade, the competition, and current

prospects are essentially for the Embassy in Peking.

The tasks of the Unit as agreed with the Inspectors

handling written and oral enquiries in Hong

Kong about trade with all parts of China;

compilation of comprehensive commercial

records on Hong Kong companies involved in

trade with China;

reporting of economic developments in southern

China;

reporting on Hong Kong/China trading links;

collation (for reference) of published data

on macro economy of China and on Chinese

commercial policy;

dissemination of information about British

products and overall British trade performance

to Hong Kong-based newspapers and journals

in circulation within China.
