d) Senior Trade Commissioner's Duty Tour

The Inspectors should note the importance of the STC's annual speaking tour in the UK. The present STC's 4 tours have helped significantly to increase interest in the market by British exporters. This should continue with financial support by the FCO and the Department of Trade.

e) EC Presidency and Hong Kong

There has been some doubt about the STC's EC rôle during the UK's Presidency. Because Hong Kong is a Dependent Territory, it would not be appropriate for the STC to act as representative of the EC in Hong Kong. There have not so far been any serious problems. The STC has accepted the proposals in my teleletter of 9 November. The Inspectors might see whether he sees any problems arising.

f) China Trade Unit (CTU)

At present the directive for the STC is not consistent with the job description of the head of the CTU, in its description of the relationship between the STC and the head of the CTU. would be helpful if one of them could be amended.
