YOUR REF

18th May, 1981.

Mr. J. Duffy, Crown Counsel,

Legal Dept.,

Government offices, Fain Wing,

Lower Albert Road,

Hong Kong.

Dear Mr. Duffy,

I was surprised and aggrieved at the MacLennan Enquiry that you supported the Attorney-General's statement that I saw those long statements against John Maclennan, when I visited the.Attorney-General's office on 24th January 1980.

You know as well as I do that those were not the statements I was shown, but that in fact the eight statements I was shown were read through in a few minutes.

ад

It was quite by chance that this was discovered, when Mr. Cerratu seid casually, "You have read the statements by the witnesses", and indi- cated a file including one statement which I believe he said was 13 rages long. Fot realising the import of his remark, I just said, "No, not those long statements. I have seen only short ones". It was then that I dis- covered the deceptionfa error,

Only you can know why you are willing to support a statement which you know to be untrue. Idid not expect you to do that, and even now it is not too late for you to admit that it was untrue.

I expected to find more sense of honour, having "yself been brought up to play a fair game.

Yours faithfully,

this chich вишей

Mrs. Elsie Elliott.
