books. The deceased reminded him that they were in a hurry to go to TVB and said that the queue at the information desk was too long. He told the deceased that there was only one other person at the desk but the deceased said that he would do it another time. He will state that in the light of John's death this behaviour had made him wonder.

They then went to the TVB studios and then together with Ian Whitely went to the Gaylord for dinner. After the meal they had a few drinks at the Waltzing Matilda and then went home. He will state that he met the deceased again on 13th January at about 6 p.m. when another incident occurred over the returning of some magazines which appeared trivial but seems to Handley to have been out of character. The last time he saw the deceased was about 0030 hours on 14th January when he and his girlfriend had a few drinks with the deceased in his quarter. He seemed relaxed.

He will state that he knows of no reason why the deceased would take his life. He will say that that in his opinion the deceased set a higher personal standard than anyone he has ever met except his father. He will say that the deceased never swore, was always very presentable and did not like gossip of any sort about anybody. He knew of no enquiry into the deceased's personal life but he does know that if the deceased had known of investigat- ions into any misconduct in his personal life then it would have affected him deeply.

Michael Ian Whitely a journalist with TVB will state that he first met the deceased in September 1979. He last met him on 11th January 1980 when he visited the TVB studios with a friend Matt Handley. After the visit they had dinner and then a few drinks at the Waltzing Matilda Bar. He left him at about 1.00 a.m. that night and he never saw the deceased again.
He will state that throughout the evening the deceased was talkative and relaxed and did not give the impression that he had anything troubling him. He was shocked by his death.

Nicholas Angell, a Chief Inspector attached to the Marine Police will state that he has known the deceased for 3-4 years. He lived in the same mess as the deceased in Kwuntong in 1976 and he lives. in the same block in Homantin as the deceased. He will say that the last time he saw the deceased was in the early hours of the morning of 14th January. He went with his girlfriend to the deceased's flat and watched TV. The deceased appeared to be quite normal. He even made arrangements to meet a mutual friend at Kai Tąk on 16th January. He and his girlfriend left the flat at about 3.00 a.m. and he did not see him again, although a tentative arrangement had been made to meet again that evening.
