STATEMENT

I, Paula Anastasia Lannas, M.B., Ch.B., (Birmingham),

Honorary Registrar, Department of Forensic Medicine, Guy's

Hospital, London SE1 9RT, wish to state:

Appendix 36

In February 1978 I carried out an autopsy and can vouch

for the following case.

it.

An ambush point was discovered on a road and the relevant

vehicle had travelled 180m along that road before leaving

It had come to rest 130m past that point. The driver

was found dead in the driving seat. He had sustained a

gunshot wound of the chest which had disintegrated the heart.

The weapon was subsequently identified as an AK47 firing

The

a 122gr bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2400 ft/sec.

accused was established as having fired a burst of shots

at

a close range, by the powder deposits; and whilst the

vehicle was travelling slowly as established by the parallel

bullet tracks through the car.

As the road was curved and the vehicle was found in

top gear it would have been required to have been steered

and actively driven for a short period between 10-20 seconds

before the driver lost control and left the road.
