Mr Liang Geng (Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy) telephoned this afternoon on this subject. After recalling his discussions with HKGD and earlier contacts with Sir E Youde Mr Liang said that his government wished to continue discusson
the outstanding points but thought it best that further contacts should take place in Peking. I said that I had seen a report that a member of the Embassy in Peking had been asked to call at the Foreign Ministry to discuss the question. Naturally we had no objection to further contacts taking place in Peking, though there might be points which we might wish to put to the Chinese Embassy here. I added that our position remained as explained to Mr Liang by Mr Clift.
