The Escape from China
3.
Source was a signed to Dawang Farm in July 1978 and soon decided to try to make a clandestine departure for a better life overseas.
4.
As he did not have any money or relatives overseas to finance him, he saved regularly from his pay, but in August 1980 almost abandoned his "escape" plans when he heard that Hong Kong and Macau were refusing entry to ex-China cases.
5. In February 1981 he heard from a Vietnamese Chinese named HUANG (7806) of the Fengjiang (7685/3068) District in Dawang Farm that Macau would probably begin to accept Vietnamese Chinese in the near future.
6.
Thus encouraged, Source and a fellow organiser of the "escape" went on 18th March 1981 to Mafang (7456/2075) and, after making enquiries of the local residents, found a fisherman known as Ya Shun (c. Ah Shun) (0068/7311) at the lock at Mafang who agreed to sell his 5.5 by 1.2 metres fishing (rowing) boat for RMB 560, of which a deposit of RMB 130 was handed over. Ya Shun refused to give a receipt, as it could incriminate him in the event of PS enquiries.
7
Four persons including Source helped to organise the departure and collected RMB 70 each from another 10 passengers. It was agreed by all that the destination should be Macau, as Hong Kong was more likely to repatriate them.
8. On 21st March, the group of 14 walked for two hours from Dawang to Mafang, where at about 2200 hours they paid the outstanding balance to the boat owner and cast off. The watchmen on duty at the lock paid no attention.
9. The group travelled via Hekou (3109/0656), Jiujiang (0046/3068), Jiangmen (3068/7024), Zhongshan (0022/1472). (sic), Sanxiang (0005/6763), and reached Macau on 28th March 1981.
