The Escape from China
8. (a) S-urce Three was persuaded to leave China when a friend at the
Tea Farm told him a relative at No.10 Production Brigade in Jingkou OCF had organised a departure boat and was soliciting Vietnamese Chinese passengers. A group of 22 persons (including children) was promptly raised from the Tea Farm, contributions of RMB 70 to 80 levied from adults, and about RMB 750 handed to the organiser when the group reached Jingkou on 29th April 1981.
(b) The following day the group was taken to a river bank to board
the boat, but to their dismay they found that it was a small rowing boat, some 5 by 1.2 m., quite unsuited to the purpose. Source and two other youths decided to try to take it to Macau, while the remainder of the passengers returned to the Farm. Whilst travelling through the Dawang OCF, one of the group spotted three friends, whom he invited aboard, increasing the complement to six.
(c) They met Chinese militia on two occasions a few hours before
rowing into Macau. On the first occasion they ignored instructions to pull in to shore, and no action was taken, and a while later they were intercepted by another militia party, who allowed them to proceed upon establishing their identity as Vietnamese Chinese. They entered Macau on 7th May.

9.
Source Three reported that his original destination was Macau, which he had believed would grant landing rights whereas he knew that Hong Kong would probably repatriate him. Nevertheless, when Macau refused entry, he was willing to press on to Hong Kong, because many others were doing
the same.
