In April 1981, Source One began organising a departure group comprising himself and nine other residents of Yingde Tea Farm, one of whom had previously worked at Jingkou (6635/0656) Overseas Chinese Farm (OCF) and who had told source that many boats were available for sale at Jinju (6930/0731), within the area of Jingkou OCF.

On 30th April 1981 the group went to Jinju, where they bought a river rowing boat for RMB 700 from a local fisherman (no details), plus provisions from a market near the river, and a map from a local resident (no details). Each member of the group had contributed RMB 75 to defray expenses.

Departing the same evening, the group travelled downstream and reached Macau on 5th May. They encountered milita launches twice en route (locations not stated) and were allowed to proceed when it was established that they were Vietnamese Chinese and not Chinese illegal emigrants.

30 Source One remarked that many of his neighbours had already succeeded in leaving China, and it was common knowledge that boats could leave Sanshui (0005/3055) County without difficulty.
