RESTAY

Vietnamese Refugees Ex-China - L/M 1323

On 17th May 1981 a twin masted wooden sailing boat sized 25m x 45 m arrived in Hong Kong with 107 ethnic Chinese passengers aboard.

2,

The boat left Wushan (0063/1472) Commune, Doumen County, in Guangdong Province near Pingsha (1627/3097) on the 9th May 1981, arriving in Macau on 14th May, having been towed for part of the way by a Macau registered fishing vessel (no details given). The boat was repaired in Macau, and they were then directed to Hong Kong by Macau officials.

All of the passengers had come from various Overseas Chinese Farms in Guangxi and Guangdong Province, where they had been resettled after emigration from Northern Vietnam in 1978 and 1979. The group leader was interviewed, and provided some information relating to the number of ethnic Chinese from Vietnam on overseas farms in Guangdong and Guangxi who intended to leave for Macau and Hong Kong. He also commented on the connivance of some Chinese officials, who assisted Overseas Chinese to make their escape in return for financial considerations. The interview report is attached.

A photograph of the vessel is also attached.
