boat at Huangtian (7806/3944) for RMB 4300, for which ZHU charged a commission of RMB 400. ZHU also arranged for a pilot for the escape, and for towage towards Macau, for which he charged a further RMB 400.

12. The group was then joined by a further 30 persons, producing a total of 91. Each contributed about RMB 130 for their place on the boat. On 13th June 1981 they departed from Shaoli. During the journey to Macau the group employed two other tow boats, in exchange for cash payments, and rowed the last part of the journey from Zhengzhan (0022/1472) to Macau. They were stopped by a Chinese patrol craft shortly before arriving at Macau and were searched by the milita crew. Once the militia were satisfied that they carried no weapons, and that all passengers were Overseas Chinese, they were allowed to continue. They also paid a bribe of RMB 300, and gave a portable radio to the militiamen on board the patrol craft. They arrived in Macau on 15th June 1981, and were redirected to Hong Kong on the same day.
