Vietnamese Refugees Ex-China L/M 1443
On 19th^tly 1981,58 ethnic Chinese passengers arrived in Hong Kong on board a wooden motorised cargo vessel of Chinese design. The vessel was powered by a 10 h.p. inboard engine, and measured 13 m x 2.8 m. All claimed to have left Vietnam during 1978 and 1979, and had been resettled on various Overseas Chinese farms in Southern China.
2. The group departed from Jingkou (6635/0656), Sanshiu County, Guangdong Province on 13th July 1981, and travelled to Hong Kong via Macau, where they were refused permission to land.
3. The attached interview report is from one of the organisers of the escape group. He claimed that the group comprised four sub-groups, one each from Hua Xian (5365/44905), Taishen (0669/1472), Hainan Island and Fengcheng (7089/1004). The group had joined together in Jingkou to make good their escape. Each adult member of the group paid RMB 110 to the organisers, who collected RMB 4,600. This money was used to buy the boat from a local resident at Jingkou. The organiser stated that the group travelled only at night during the escape journey in order to avoid detection by Chinese security forces. He also commented on reports that he had heard regarding refugees in Macau returning to China, and the repatriation of ex-China Vietnamese refugees by the Hong Kong Government.

A photograph of the boat is attached.
