ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: CHILDREN AND IMMIGRANT MOTHERS
1. The Lord Privy Seal has now seen the papers on both these issues. We pointed out that though your proposals for dealing with the problem were tough, they were realistic and defensible. He agreed but stressed that if the matter is raised here, we have to be able to say that there exists a legal way in which families may be reunited; this may take a long time but so it does for the Sub-continent in UK's case and the priority is determined not by us or Hong Kong but by the Chinese in Hong Kong's case. As I see it, the present position is in line with this.
2.
We are most grateful for all the information that you have provided on these two topics. I hope that you will be able to warn us of any similar problems. As you will have seen, the Minister takes a close interest in them and we need to make him aware of such issues as they arise.
