Of the eight photographs you sent with your letter to Iain Orr of 9 January, (which I hope we can retain), four were certainly genuine and showed activities by the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) during their spell of full-time duty on the border during October. It is almost certain that the Free China Relief Association obtained these from the representative of the pro-KMT "Hong Kong Times", who was one of a Press party invited to see the Volunteers on operations. Two of the other photos appear to be of mainly British troops and one of them, showing the muscular kneeling captive, has been faked. The remaining two are pretty standard Taiwan propaganda efforts depicting a noble but tragic

the illegal immigrant we sent back (our TelNo 1644 of 15 December 1980) whom the Wanderers sought to make a political martyr.

The embarrassment these photos would cause even if published is slight : it is the risk we have to take with any Press visit.

Apart from a rather forlorn claim, made immediately on return to Hong Kong, that the trip to the UK had been successful, the Wanderers have since kept their heads right down. They probably realise that the whole outing was a dismal failure from the publicity point of view.
