NATIONALITY BILL: HONG KONG
I. I understand that the Home Secretary will give an appropriate reassurance to the Citizens of British Dependent Territories when explaining the creation of this citizenship during the Third Reading Debate tomorrow.
2. This should go a long way to meeting the anxieties of the Dependent Territories but will fall short of pacifying Hong Kong unless some reference is made to their position as United Kingdom Nationals. I wonder therefore if Willie Whitelaw would be prepared to consider the addition of the following sentence to his statement:-
'I would add that the Citizens of British Dependent
Territories of course remain United Kingdom Nationals and, as such, will continue to enjoy our protection in the sphere of international
relations'.
