BRITISH NATIONALITY BILL
199
1.
I am sorry you have had to wait two months for a reply to your Telno 532 to HKGO of 1 April about the Times report of a European Commission study of the Nationality Bill.
The Commission has,
2. The Times report is not entirely accurate. in fact, been examining certain details of our immigration rules with EC law, and has held discussions with Home Office officials on these points. None of the points raised relate to the British Nationality Bill, and thus will have no bearing on the timing of the
Bill.
3.
Similarly, the Legal Affairs Committee report referred to in the article was primarily concerned with alleged sexual discrimination in UK immigration rules. The report did not refer to the Nationality Bill. However, when it was debated in the European Parliament, a number of UK MEP did link the Bill with the Immigration rules, hence the Times article.
