VERNON
(cont'd)
We have followed this philosophy in Papua New Guinea
and we have expressed that as our philosophy in
every country we have moved into.
(Vernon explained the world geographical split of RTZ, i.e., that the Pacific/Asia division was
separate from the Europe/Africa division.)
We have never had in any of our associations any
problem because of relationship of RTZ in South Africa.
SCOTT
The point of my question is this: Chinese people generally have a philosophic and moral stance on
South Africa. I wished to confirm that you are
aware of this.
WATT
Perhaps we should take the point of the conditions
of the licence.
Television licences were awarded by public tender and
the most searching enquiry was made in to the
background of all applicants. At the time of the
application for the first licence there were eight applicants. Codes of practice based partly on Australian codes, partly on British and partly on
American were published at that time. The licences
are for 15 years subject to renewal at the 7 year mid-point. This renewal has just been approved
following a detailed investigation into the performance of both the licensees and a study of their programmes during the previous 5 years.
