PROPOSED BBC RELAY STATION IN HONG KONG

1.

Sir E Youde wished to write to the Governor of Hong Kong asking for his views on this subject and some of the possible pitfalls involved.

2.

Information Department have suggested that we should not wait until Sir E Youde's return but send a telegram because Mr Ridley is due to meet BBC representatives on 22 June. (The first available bag to Hong Kong arrives only on 20 June).

The draft telegram reflects the views which Sir E Youde expressed to Mr MacInnes and myself. It takes account of Sir Ian Trethowan's meeting with Lord N Gordon Lennox at which it emerged that Mr Howard of the BBC had returned from the Territory with an over-optimistic view of Hong Kong's commitment to the proposal.
