Thank you for your letter of 2 October about the proposed Hong Kong relay station. It was useful to have these reports

recorded.

As you know, we are in the course of reviewing our plans for the External Services in the light of thedebates which took place in Parliament during July, and there will be some un- certainty about the timing of the Hong Kong project until the overall financial picture is clear. Meanwhile, I am advised that we need not worry too much at this stage about what is being said in Hong Kong on the possible development of Deep Bay as an airport. This is a very tentative idea and no decisions have been taken and none are likely for several months which might affect our interest in Tsang Tsui. Consultants have been asked to make a preliminary assessment of the likely effects of such a development on the area; but I am told that the indications are that Chek Lap Kok near Lantau Island, for which a full feasibility study has already been undertaken, is still the favoured site for the new airport.
