Thank you for your letter of 22 December about the Hong Kong Club.
In fact a very thorough enquiry was made into the future of the Club. After a majority of its members decided that its premises should be redeveloped, consideration was given as to whether the building should be declared a monument under the Hong Kong Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance. This the Governor declined to do on the advice of his Executive Council, primarily because of the large sum of public money that would have been required to restore and maintain the building. The architectural and historical arguments were of course fully taken into account.
Yours ever,
Felin.
