The Hung Hom Senior Staff Quarters were occupied in February 1981 and the Sha Tin Stage I arters will be ready at the end of 1981, altogether providing 168 flats. The Polytechnic estimates that there will be a shortfall of some 122 quarters by 1984-85 and has proposed to develop Stage II on the existing Shatin site to provide 54 flats, and for the remaining shortfall to be met by development on another site yet to be found. The Committee feels that the Sha Tin Stage II project should start as soon as possible.

There is considerable demand for increasing the intake of students into the Diploma Course in Maritime Science. The proposed extension to the fourth floor of the Main Building to provide additional accomodation of 780 m net for the Nautical Studies Department is therefore sup- ported, on the understanding that there would be a corres- ponding reduction in the provision of space in Phase III which the Polytechnic was told in the 1981 allocation to plan to produce 12,100 m2 net.

The Committee supports in principle proposals to develop a proper main entrance to the Polytechnic to enable better pedestrian and vehicular entrance and the replacement of Phase I lifts, and has phased expenditure to start in 1983-84.

The Committee is aware of the Polytechnic's need for outdoor sports facilities but having regard to other priorities, it is likely that funds would be recommended to allow a start to be made in 1983-84 and for the project to be substantially completed by 1985-86, In the meantime it is noted that the Polytechnic is making some progress, although not entirely to its satisfaction, in the use of; facilities run by the Urban Council.
