Capital Recommendations for 1982-83

Hong Kong University

Central Animal Breeding Unit

14.

The inadequacy of animal houses at the University of Hong Kong has been a source of complaints for some years, but the establishment of a dental school, a second medical school at the Chinese University and the development of para- medical studies at the Polytechnic have made the difficulties more obvious and the need for a solution more pressing.

15.

At present, rodents and lagomorphs (rabbits) are bred in the Laboratory Animal Unit in Sassoon Road. In addi- tion, the Unit is required to provide facilities for animal experimentation, this being the function for which it was designed. The operation of the building for quarantine, breeding and experimental holding of laboratory animals places considerable strains on its function, such that maintenance of the breeding colonies without microbiological contamination for any length of time is highly unlikely.

The amount of space available in the Unit for experimental purposes is severely limited. The establishment of a central breeding facility is required to ensure a satisfactory continuation in the supply of laboratory animals and will enable the laboratory Animal Unit to be used solely for the purpose of animal experimen- tation.

Reference to the need for a central animal breeding unit was made in the Committee's capital recommendations. 1978-81 to Government
