The
second might have a major effect on the Industrial Centre. Committee has noted these plans but would like to defer consider- ation pending further study by the Polytechnic. This is also necessary because the Polytechnic's version of Phase III provides

The Polytechnic do not have a proper venue for examina- tions, exhibitions, seminars, and other functions. Annually for up to 4 or 5 months examinations, both internal and external are conducted with a total of over 22,000 candidates sitting for various subjects. At present these are held in various locations including student rooms and even the gymnasium. This is unsatis- factory. The Polytechnic propose to build a single-storey structure (General Purpose Hall) in the seldomly used courtyard opposite the Staff Canteen. The project is estimated to cost $3.2m, and the Polytechnic hope that it will be funded mainly though not

wholly by benefaction. The Committee supports the proposal, an
and
recommends a seeding grant of $1 million towards the costs of the project, the balance to be met by private donation.
