Included in the Basic Medical Science Building are two floors (5th and 6th) for animal holding. It was thought that the 6th floor would not be required until 1983-84 and hence no provision

had been made to furnish the area, because it was envisaged that on completion of the building in 1981 the proposed central breeding facility at HKU would also be completed and be able to supply all the laboratory animals required. Given the delays on the central facility, CUHK could utilise the top (6th) floor of the building

and was asked to produce costs for furnishing the area. This project has the Committee's support.

The Polytechnic plan to achieve a BFTE (BFTE Building Full-time Equivalent, or the number of students on campus expressed in term of space requirement) of 9,345 for 1983-84. Based on this

2 an additional 16,600 m2 net (23,000 m2 gross) would be required. 1,100 m2 net will be provided in the Marine Engineering Laboratory Building which is a donated project under construction. Polytechnic have proposed two major projects to meet the remaining shortfall - Phase IIB providing 3,400 m net, and Phase III to

give 12,100 m' net. Phase IIB is the projected fourth wing development, which would complete the square of buildings of which Phases I and IIA form three sides. It will be built on the Marine Engineering Laboratory Building, taking advantage of the strengthened foundations of the latter for which Government has made a grant of $0.411m. Accordingly, the Polytechnic's estimated cost of $21m for Phase IIB can be reduced to $20.50m. The Committee supports Phase IIB and recommends that funds be made available for site

investigation in 1982-83.
