In order to meet the clinical teaching needs for an intake of 150 rather than 100 students at HKU Medical School, University Departments have had to extend their activities to 10 hospitals. This has inevitably placed burdens on the pre- clinical and clinical departments, and it is clear that the interim allocation of 24 medical posts by Government in 1979-80 has afforded relief to clinical departments. The Committee is, however, aware that there is an ongoing need to review medical staffing structure at HKU. Parity will also have to be secured for the preclinical departments, in terms of senior posts, with the developments which are underway at CUHK. Furthermore the HKU School was visited by the General Medical Council in 1980: the subsequent report is regarded as highly satisfactory though it is clear that some new developments in certain subjects e.g. dermatology, ENT, geriatrics will be necessary. These will have to be set alongside the recently announced developments for additional beds at QMH for psychiatry, paediatrics, burns etc. The Medical Sub-Committee hopes to take an over view of these: matters in January 1981, and to explore with the main Committee and Government possible ways and means of integrating University and Medical & Health Department staff developments in the long run.

Another major development has been the progress of the new Medical School at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The establishment of the Medical Dean's Office, and the formulation of education foundations for a progressive 5-year curriculum, have been achieved by a very strong CUHK Medical Academic Advisory Committee (consisting of Hong Kong, UK and USA preclinical and clinical experts) chaired by Professor Sir William Trethowan.

The Committee is pleased that the unusual opportunities of building a medical school in close proximity to CUHK, with clinical facilities in a Regional Hospital serving the Eastern section of the New Territories and sited in the New Town of Shatin,
