Consultancy
The performance of consultancy services for local industry and commerce is an important element in the activity of the Polytechnic, and the willingness of local industry
to seek consultancy services from the Polytechnic is a significant measure of the confidence which the institution has generated in the community.
The Polytechnic has proposed within its estimates that a self financing Consultancy Company, or similar organi-
sation, be formed to co-ordinate and develop this area of
work. The estimates suggest that a very small nucleus of staff of the company be funded through the triennium with a view to that part of the operating costs being absorbed in the following triennium at the latest. The proposal has the support of the Committee, and allowance for this was made in arriving at the recommended grant amounts.

Student Affairs
The Committee recognises the desirability of adequate sports facilities for students, but also recognises the near-impossibility of providing these on the very limited Polytechnic site. In these circumstances every effort has to be made to use existing or planned facilities in the area. In practice this means Urban Council facilities, primarily the existing Wanchai Sports Ground and the Hung Hom Indoor Stadium under construction. The Polytechnic has, most regrettably,
been so far unable to obtain much access to the Wanchai Stadium
from the Urban Council, and sees little hope of gaining access to the Hung Hom stadium when completed. The Committee finds this situation disturbing, but is reluctant to consider capital
recommendations for out-door sports facilities until all means of obtaining access to other existing and planned facilities have been exhausted, particularly those funded by the taxpayer.
