Management information system

The Committee supports the development of a management information system, but has warned the University of the need for careful definition from the outset of responsibility for direction, planning, co-ordination, and use. The Committee believes that further consideration by the University is needed, but that the scheme should be implemented as quickly as possible

thereafter.

Student affairs.

The Committee welcomes the reorganisation of the Office of Student Affairs, and the establishment of an Appointments Board.

Our estimates will be adequate to support a continued improvement in student counselling and careers

advice.

Research

The University has proposed a strengthening of graduate and research work undertaken by teaching and research staff. The University pointed out to us that financial needs in this area have increased due to the decline in external support for some of the work carried on in their research centres and institutes. We have noted these requests and made some allowance for them.. We are not, however, satisfied that the internal management of research funds (and in particular the structure of small centres and institutes that has built up in response to a variety of pressures and circumstances) is as efficient as is necessary. We hope that during the next triennium progress in rationalising this structure will be made, which (if it is,) would not only enable us to support a greater research commitment in future, but would also encourage Foundations and others to fund an

enhanced level of activities.
