The development of the existing Minor programme in Statistics into a Major programme in conjunction with the formation of a Statistical Consulting Services Unit appears promising, particularly if the activities of the Unit are sufficiently wide-ranging to include the social sciences. The Committee has also noted the inauguration of a Major programme in Computer Science, the first graduates of which should emerge in 1982. The numbers, however, will be quite small, and those whose particular studies are in data processing even smaller. In view of Hong Kong's needs in this area we expressed the view that the University should, if possible, increase this number; and they have now done so. In this connection also the Committee has expressed the view that the introduction of a new master's degree in Computer Science consisting of two years of research orientated studies may be premature, that graduates of such a course may not find a satisfying career locally, and may be lost to Hong Kong. We believe that the Department should concentrate on its work in providing a Major in Computer Science in the undergraduate area, and in providing a range of offerings for students majoring in other areas such as business administration. Finally the Committee notes that the five-year Work-Study Programme within the Electronics Department is a successful course, and that further development of this programme will occur. Innovative programmes such as this suggest possibilities of extension to other selected disciplines.

Arts and Social Sciences

The Committee believes there are good academic arguments in favour of developing anthropology as a major subject, but that progress will not be easy. Hong Kong and China are important in anthropological work, but to be academically viable a spread of geographical interest is essential. Funds will also be needed for field work. We shall therefore continue to emphasise to the University the need for a very clear understanding of the long term impli- cations of their initiative.
