Academic Development Proposals and their Estimates for the 1981-84 triennium. We have also met representatives of the Polytechnic Council. Many comments have already been made to the institutions in the allocution address. Others will be made

when they are informed of the approved grants.

Some comments which relate to HKU are

Engineering

Three years ago we commented upon the difficult problems faced by the Engineering Faculty at HKU as a conse- quence of the widening of Pokfulam Road. The UPGC recognises the frustrations and delays which have occurred during these

past years, and hopes that the long-deferred move to the new building will give an opportunity for re-equipment of the Faculty to the best modern standards.

The Committee has received a request for special funding (of some $36 million) to be directed specifically to

the equipment needs of the Faculty. However the Committee believes that sufficient resources exist within the equipment component of the capital for the new building and within the

recommended indicated grant for equipment in the next triennium, so that the University has the capability within its own hands to ensure that appropriate equipping of the Engineering Faculty

occurs.

The Committee was pleased to note the manner in which the Faculty was seeking to meet the need for continuing education of practising engineers in Hong Kong, both through part-time higher degrees and diplomas and through short courses dealing
